QR Code Color wall research

Conducted a usability study to determine how customers interact with the color wall using QR codes, what features stood out, and explored new opportunities to better meet user needs.

Project Details

Why was this project conducted?

The goal of this project was to understand how real life customers were currently using the color wall at a home improvement store, if they were using the QR code stickers located around the color wall, and once in the QR code digital experience, were they able to complete tasks with ease.

Weekly meetings were held with cross-functional teams and goals were set around the research roadmap. I also collaborated with a subject matter expert and business team member about the current landscape of the color wall.

The subject matter expert and I flew to several locations to conduct in person usability studies to determine the above questions. Documentation was taken live while talking with participants and both qualitative and quantitative information was measured.

What was the impact?

The impact was that many customers were not aware of the QR codes themselves and even when they were able to locate and use the codes, the digital experience made it difficult at times to complete some of the tasks.

I gathered all findings into a prioritization spreadsheet to go over with business and technology teams for feasibility. The research was then presented to all teams to determine design tweaks and future follow-up research that needed done. Without this research, tons of color wall locations would still be difficult for customers to use and the digital experience would have been a waste with many customers not being able to use certain aspects.

Project Timeline

Step 1: Usability Study

Conducted an in person usability study to determine how customers were interacting with a color wall QR code experience and how the experience can become more user friendly and what features stood out most. I would walk up to real customers at a home improvement store and documenting live feedback on the spot. The study also explored features once participants were inside the website after using the QR code.

Step 2: Deliverables

Created a slide deck reviewing the findings from the usability study and then creating a prioritization document to determine which issues to work on first for each team. Started working on early designs based on the feedback from the usability study.

Step 3: Redesigns & Launch

Redesigned the app concepts based on research. These were later handed off to the technology team who built in the changes to the QR code experience.
