color visualizer competitive usability study

Conducted a competitive usability study comparing 4 different color visualizer tools and seeing which one worked best for participants needs.

Project Details

Why was this project conducted?

A home improvement store wanted to conduct a usability study to compare their visualizer tool with three competitors and see which one participants preferred, which one was easiest to use, and how their tool matched up against the others.

I was brought on last minute to help when the UX team member who was going to conduct the study had to step away and so I had two days to finish the facilitators guide, get myself up to speed on the study and its' goals, and know the different tools inside and out. The entire competitive usability study lasted two weeks and sessions lasted all day for the most part.

What was the impact?

The impact was immediate with many participants preferring another tool over the home improvement store specific one. Certain aspects weren't as easy to use and certain elements were hard to find compared to some of the competitor visualizer tools. The home improvement store was able to take these findings and adjust the tool based on the feedback.

These findings were presented to business and technology teams so that the design of the tool could be altered for an easier and more functional experience for customers. These findings were also prioritized for the technology team to determine which items to work on first and which items were technologically feasible.

Project Timeline

Step 1: Competitive Usability Study

Conducted a remote competitive usability study to compare a home improvement visualizer tool with three other tools to see which one users preferred most.

Step 2: Deliverables

Created a slide deck reviewing the findings from the usability study and displaying quantitative data to show which tasks were most successful and what areas did and did not work for participants.

Step 3: Redesigns & Launch

Redesigned the visualizer tool based on research. These were later handed off to the technology team who built in the changes to the experience and look of the tool.
